TangoAtlas.org

TangoAtlas is an algorithm-free directory of tango resources — people, places, events, media, products. Search results don’t know the difference between a milonga and a milkshake, and Facebook groups don’t scale across cities, so the tango world has no durable, shared record of what it actually knows. TangoAtlas is my answer: a directory built in the community’s own vocabulary, easy to add to, and exportable — resources shouldn’t die with websites, Facebook posts, and organizers who move on.

It is three tools that share one community commons. The Atlas is the directory: browse by type (currently organizations, venues, persons, events, media, resources) without an algorithm deciding what you see. The Card is a low-maintenance contact card — one link organizers can trust, so you can be found without joining another social network or oversharing. Charlemos is the long-term bet: an alternative to Facebook on free and open source software, aligned with users instead of ads and outrage algorithms — the concrete continuation of the Tangoverse idea.

The thinking behind it started on this blog — platform-vs-ecosystem analysis, the Fediverse-as-email argument, and what “boring infrastructure” makes possible — and the tango-specific versions of those essays live on tangoatlas.org/blog. The platform is actively under construction; the directory is seeded and growing.

Where things stand: the Atlas is the furthest along, and the Card and Charlemos are both pre-launch — built and usable, but none of the three is advertised anywhere yet. Writing about them here is the quiet rollout.
